Islamabad: On Sunday, Thai and Cambodian authorities rescued 215 foreigners in a major raid on a suspected cyber scheme center in the Cambodian border city of Papayt.
According to Thai government spokesman Jerio Hongsub, the operation, held in Bantia Minach, was released in 109 Thiles, 50 Pakistani, 48 Indians, five Taiwan, and three Indonesian residents.
“It was from a building on suspicion of cyber fraud for both countries, which is the largest number of Thai,” said Jerio.
The United Nations estimates that criminal networks have smuggled millions of people into Southeast Asia, forcing them into scam operations that generate billions of dollars annually.
The crackdown has intensified at scam centers after the recent rescue of Chinese actor Wang Xing, which was lured by Thailand with a promise of employment, but was abducted and taken to a Myanmar scam center.
Regional governments have promoted efforts to eliminate these operations. Earlier this month, Thailand reduced the supply of electricity, fuel and Internet to areas affiliated with the Thai Myanmar border as well as the areas associated with scam centers. The Thai army said Saturday that China had also sent 621 of its citizens back home, who were rescued from such centers.
