Opposition parties renew calls for fresh, quick elections

Islamabad: On Tuesday, a meeting of the multi -party opposition parties renewed their demand for the latest elections in Pakistan, describing the general election as “rigging” on February 8, 2024.

Addressing the media after a meeting of the Opposition Alliance organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Joy-F chief Maulana Fazl Rehman, Maulana Fazal, the head of Joy-F, Maulana Fazal Rehman said the meeting with the dinner was gathered to the leaders of various opposition parties, including Shahid Khazan Abbasi, the leader of the Awam Pakistan Party.

Talking to the media after the gathering, Fazal Rehman reaffirmed his demand for withdrawal from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government and announcing new elections.

He also raised concerns over the expiry of the term of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Alexander Sultan Raja, whose five -year term ended on January 26.

While the government approved the 26th Constitutional Amendment to extend the rule of Raja until a new CEC was appointed, he emphasized that consultation was needed on the matter.

Rehman emphasized that the present government has no longer represented the people of Pakistan. His comments compatible with Abbasi’s expression, who emphasized the need for joint efforts to protect constitutional rights.

Abbasi also confirmed that opposition parties reached a consensus during the meeting to demand the release of recent elections and political prisoners.

The leaders added that they called “fascism” in the country, and emphasized the importance of a government that really reflects the will of the people.

Earlier, Abbasi had met with Rehman at his residence to discuss the ongoing political progress in the country.

With the opposition’s unanimous stance against the current government and the demand for their new elections, the pressure on the ruling officials will increase with the approaching of the February elections.
