KARACHI: Taha Ahmed Khan, leader of the Mutahida National Movement Pakistan (MQMP) and deputy parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, has written to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), and has urged him to be threatened with deadly traffic in Karaki.

In his letter, Taha expressed grief over the tragic incident of Malir Halt, in which a pregnant woman, her husband and her premature child lost her life due to careless driving.

Taha highlighted that 207 people have been killed and 2,623 were injured in road accidents across Karachi since January 2025. He demanded immediate action against those responsible for the Malir Halt tragedy and questioned why the Sindh government compensated those who are poisoned by poisonous liquor but ignores those killed in traffic accidents.

He called on the Chief Justice to impose strict restrictions on illegal heavy vehicles and dumpers, which he identified as a major cause of fatal accidents.

MQMP leader demanded:

  • Pay for families of victims of the accident.

  • Strict implementation of traffic laws, including Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 and Sindh Motor Vehicle Rules 1969.

  • Action under Section 279 and 304-A of the Pakistan Code of Conduct for careless driving.

  • Specific times and routes for heavy vehicles.

  • Installation of speed cameras and an effective challan system.

  • Improving road safety, including street lights and better road conditions.

“Innocent lives are being lost,” he emphasized.

An eyewitness provided details of the cold of the Malir Halt accident, in which a careless water tanker targeted Abdul Qayyim and his pregnant wife Zainab, and immediately killed them and caused their child’s premature birth, which did not survive.

An eyewitness, Mashkur Khan, said how the tanker coming from the wrong side of the road collided with several vehicles before running over the couple near Malir Halt Flyover.

The tragedy has rejected the demands of strict road safety measures, citizens have urged authorities to eliminate negligent driving and unorganized heavy traffic that continues to claim their lives.
