Former US President Donald Trump has announced to clear new prices on dozens of countries, including 29 % tariffs on Pakistani imports, in which he describes “long -term trade imbalance” and unfair treatment of US products abroad.

Trump said the move was in direct response, which he claims that 58 % of US tariffs are imposed on US goods. “We are just equalizing the playground,” Trump said during a press conference. “For a long time, other countries have subsidized their economies on the back of an American worker.”

The United States is one of Pakistan’s most important trading partners, of which bilateral trade has reached $ 7.3 billion in 2024. US exports to Pakistan increased by 4.4 percent to $ 2.1 billion, while imports from Pakistan increased by 4.9 percent to $ 5.1 billion.

Rump’s announcement is part of a wider strategy to renounce global trade under its “US First” banner. The tariff package affects more than 40 countries, with new rates from 10 to 50 %. China faces 34 % tariff, India 26 %, and Vietnam 46 %. Other affected countries include the UK, Japan, South Korea and the European Union.

The former president described the prices as mutual and necessary that it is called the “national emergency” of the trade deficit. “This is about justice,” Trump said. “If they tax us 40 %, we will respond to 20 %. If they pay us 60 % tax, we respond to 30 %.”

Although the US government has not yet issued a formal response from the affected countries to a possible retaliation, trade analysts have warned that cleansing taxes can increase tensions with major partners and interfere with global supply chains.

Trump endorsed his administration’s commitment to discuss trade terms, which he called the “equal base”.
