18 Rising prices of essential commodities are defying the government's claims.

Despite the government’s claims of controlling inflation, the prices of 18 essential commodities were recorded during the last week.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has released its weekly inflation report, highlighting mixed trends in the cost of living.

The report highlighted that the weekly inflation rate eased to 0.65 percent, but the price of key commodities continued to rise.

Commodities witnessing price increases include groundnut (up 2.56%), cooking oil (up 1.56%) and sugar (up 1.23%).

Additionally, products like ghee, bread, garlic and wood are also among the costlier ones.

On an annualized basis, the inflation rate for the week reached 1.90%, indicating continued upward pressure on prices despite some minor weekly fluctuations.

According to the PBS report, the prices of 10 commodities, including tomatoes, have decreased during the same period.

Additionally, potatoes (down 10.36%), eggs (down 5.96%), and chick pea dal (down 1.64%) are among the items that fell in price.

Meanwhile, the prices of 23 essential commodities remained unchanged. Commodities such as onions, rice, and ground pulses also experienced a drop in prices during the week, easing the inflation rate slightly.

Despite the slight weekly decline, the annual inflation rate remains high at 15.15%, reflecting the continued challenges facing households.

The trend shows that although there has been some relief, rising commodity prices continue to weigh on consumers, contradicting the government’s assurance of market price stability.
