Islamabad: The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Federation of Pakistan regarding the restoration of the students’ union in the universities and adjourned the hearing and set a date.
A six-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, comprising Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Musrat Hilali and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, heard the constitutional petition. University students are prohibited from forming associations and unions and from engaging in politics.
The petitions were filed by Hamza Muhammad Khawaja v. Federation of Pakistan through Secretary Federal Education and Professional Training Islamabad and others and Muhammad Osama Ameer General Secretary Islami Jamiat Talaba Pakistan v. Federation of Pakistan through Secretary Ministry of Interior and others.
After the preliminary proceedings, the court issued a notice to the parties and observed that the Quaid-e-Azam University has announced the schedule for the student union elections. It can be a role model for other universities in the country.
However, the court expressed displeasure at the involvement of professional associations in active politics. Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi remarked that the student union introduced violence in universities. Student union is for the welfare of students and not for politics.
Justice Musrat Hilali remarked that politics in our country has generally become aggressive.
