The notification issued by the Water Agency states that those who waste water in such activities will be fined Rs 20,000. First-time violators will be fined Rs 10,000 for domestic customers and Rs 20,000 for commercial customers. A second violation will result in disconnection of water supply.

The decision was taken following a court order that called for a comprehensive strategy to curb misuse of water. The court emphasized the need for urgent action to protect and conserve water resources amid growing water scarcity concerns.

The move comes at a time when wastage of water for unnecessary purposes, such as washing cars and cleaning large, paved areas, has become a major problem, especially in urban centers.

The increasing demand for water coupled with water scarcity in many parts of Pakistan has forced local authorities including WASA to take measures to reduce excessive water use.
