The historic achievement marks the end of Pakistan’s 32-year quest for an Olympic gold medal, making it the country’s first individual gold and first medal in track and field events.
Both Nadeem and India’s champion Neeraj Chopra faced difficulties in the opening round of the javelin final, with Nadeem’s first attempt invalided and Chopra’s foot broken. Grenada’s Anderson Peters took the early lead with a throw of 87.87m.
Nadeem turned the tide in the second round with a throw of 92.97 metres, setting a new Olympic record and taking the lead. Chopra, who threw 89.45m, finished behind Nadeem.
In the third round, Peters failed to improve on his first mark, while Nadeem managed a throw of 88.72m, the best of the round. Chopra’s attempt also failed but Nadeem maintained his dominant position.
In the final round, Nadeem threw 91.79 meters, securing his top spot and winning the gold medal. Chopra, struggling to match his previous performance, secured the silver medal with a throw of 89.45 metres.
Peters rounded out the podium with a bronze medal for a throw of 88.54 meters, her first Olympic medal.
