ISLAMABAD: A petition against the physical remand of senior journalist Matiullah Jan was filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) today, demanding that the court quash it.
The petition filed by Matiullah’s lawyer Iman Mazari challenged the decision of Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Tahir Abbas supra, which said that John was arrested on a false and fabricated case. .
The petitioner requested the court to hear the petition today as it would become ineffective after that.
Yesterday, the anti-terrorism court sent the journalist to jail on two-day physical remand in a case filed in Margalla police station. He was detained on charges of terrorism and drug possession. The FIR was registered on the complaint of Superintendent of Police Asif Ali.
The FIR states that Matiullah in his white Toyota Yaris intentionally injured police constable Mudassar when he was signaled to stop at a check post on Margalla Road in E-9 sector.
It was claimed that John was intoxicated at the time, while police recovered 246 grams of the drug methamphetamine (crystal meth) from his vehicle. The case was registered at 3:20 am, almost an hour after her alleged abduction.
Earlier, his family reported that Matiullah Jan, a critic of the government’s handling of the PTI protests, along with fellow journalist Saqib Bashir, were arrested at 11 pm on Wednesday. Bashir was eventually released, John’s whereabouts remain unclear, his family said in a statement on social media.
