Karachi confirmed the first MPOx case associated with international travel

After a 28 -year -old man from Shah Latif Town, after having positive experience for viral illness, health officials in Karachi have confirmed the first case of the city.

According to the Sindh Health Department, the patient probably signed a virus contract with his wife, who recently returned from abroad and started to show signs. The man is currently being treated in a isolation ward, and authorities have imposed a strict containment protocol.

It is the latest in a series of MPOX cases in Pakistan as the virus was first reported on January 25, 2025, when a Gulf passenger had positively experienced at Peshawar airport. In 2023, nine certified cases – which include passengers coming from abroad were recorded in Pakistan.

The World Health Organization announced the global health emergency in August last year. The virus, which is closely associated with the smallpox, can spread through direct contact with infectious wounds, physical fluids, and contaminated materials such as beds or clothing.

MPOx Dangers and Symptoms

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current global outbreak has serious consequences. Although the MPOX stress rate appears to be up to 10 %, the more common cleaned II stress rate is less than 0.2 %.

Pregnant women, newborns and weak immune systems are among the highest risk of serious complications.

Early symptoms are often similar to the flu, such as fever, cold, fatigue and muscle aches, followed by raising, abrasive lesions, which may take weeks to heal.

Health officials in Sindh have urged the public to be vigilant and immediately report symptoms, especially for people with recent travel history.
