Pakistan aims to convert 30% vehicles into EVs by year 2030

ISLAMABAD: According to Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization, and Board of Investment Abdul Aleem Khan, Pakistan aims to convert 30 percent of its vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030.

This ambitious target will be achieved under the Government’s approved Electric Vehicles (EV) policy.

The Minister emphasized that these important initiatives are designed to promote widespread adoption of technology and sustainable transportation..

Addressing a two-day session on “Transport and the Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Aleem discussed green urban transport solutions, renewable energy projects and the adoption of electric vehicles to address growing challenges. He stressed the urgent need of Population pressure and deteriorating air quality in large cities.

Aleem Khan highlighted the government’s efforts to develop the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles, including installation of charging stations, to ensure a smooth transition to electric mobility.

He also shared exciting developments, such as the introduction of the first fleet of bio-methane hybrid buses in Karachi, which are set to save 100 percent in fuel costs.

Additionally, the National Green Transport Project could explore Public Private Partnership (PPP) models to ensure long-term sustainability and success.

The minister stressed the urgent need for developing countries to tackle the twin challenges of climate change and smog, which severely affect human health and quality of life.

He called for targeted, micro-level interventions in the transport sector to bring about tangible and lasting change. Aleem Khan also participated in the session on “Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” which focused on green technology, smog reduction and digitization of transport sector.

The participation of the Pakistani delegation in the Forum provided valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange and formulation of viable, long-term policies.

Alim Khan expressed special thanks to Azerbaijan’s Minister of Transport Rashid Nabiyev and Minister of Economy Mikael Jabrov, noting the fruitful discussions with ministers and delegates from other participating countries.
