KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided to formally work with President Osuf Ali Zardari, dealing with the construction of six new canals on the Indus River.
Party sources confirmed that the problem, which has protested massively throughout Sindh, will be raised with the federal government with Edolent Fitr.
According to reports, President Zardari will discuss the matter with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and emphasize the Council of Commonwealth (CCI) meeting to discuss the canal plans. Despite the increasing pressure, the federal government has not yet engaged in the PPP or responded to the calls of the CCI meeting.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has rejected the news that President Zardari has approved the canal plans at a recent meeting. He made it clear that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss irrigation and land cultivation, but the minutes were misrepresented to suggest the presidential approval of the projects.
“Sindh has officially challenged the River Indus System Authority (IRSA) certificate regarding the canal projects,” Murad said, reiterating that any new canals must first be approved by the CCI. He also noted that the Sindh representative had already recorded the objections when the matter was raised in the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in Nawabshah on Sunday to celebrate Eidol Fitr. Upon arriving at Nawabshah airport, senior PPP leaders received them, including Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Haji Ali Hassan Zardari, and Ghulam Qadir Chandi.
The President offered Eid prayer at the Zardari House and later met with party leaders and members of the National and Provincial Assemblies. He also visited Blue Jay Cuba to offer victory over his parents’ graves.
Talking to the PPP Sindh leadership, President Zardari reviewed the ongoing development and welfare schemes in the province. He directed the authorities to prioritize public issues and accelerate infrastructure projects, and emphasized the need for effective governance to address citizens’ concerns.
