A anti -corruption court acquitted Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz on Thursday after hearing both defense and prosecution arguments in the Ramadan Sugar Mills case. Initially, the case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in 2018 was alleged that Shahbaz had misused his authority as Chief Minister Punjab to benefit his family’s business.

The NAB had accused Shahbaz of directing the construction of a drain in Chennai district for Ramadan sugar mills, causing loss of Rs 213 million to the national exchequer. However, after amending the National Accountability Ordinance in 2024, the matter was transferred to the Anti -Corruption Court as the NAB can no longer be prosecuted against cases of less than Rs 500 million.

On Thursday, the court accepted the acquittal requests of both Shahbaz and Hamza. Defense lawyer Amjad Flight argued that the matter was politically encouraged, and saying that the drain was a broader development scheme approved by the Punjab Cabinet instead of the direction issued by the then minister.
