The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has introduced a system to ensure that the involvement of top players and international cricketers does not overburden the budget of the franchise.

The initiative includes financial support through funds allocated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

PCB has set up a special fund to help elite players with franchise payments.

For players like David Warner, the PCB will contribute up to $100,000 from the fund, reducing the burden on the franchise.

For example, Karachi Kings, who picked Warner, will have to pay only $200,000 of their $300,000 minimum fee, making him the most expensive player in PSL history.

This arrangement was initiated a few years ago by a decision of the PSL Governing Council.

It was agreed that $500,000 per year would be set aside for elite player payments when the Central Pool’s broadcast revenue exceeded PKR 3 billion.

Now, the fund has been increased to $1 million, allowing the PCB to provide financial support for high-profile players.

David Warner was picked by the Karachi Kings for $300,000.

The PCB’s contribution reduces franchise costs by $200,000.

Daryl Mitchell was acquired by Lahore Qalandars for a minimum fee of $200,000, supported by the PCB Fund.

While most players in PSL history have received up to $170,000, notable exceptions include AB de Villiers ($250,000) and Kieron Pollard ($230,000).

PCB aims to attract top international talent by increasing salaries.

However, scheduling conflicts with Indian Premier League (IPL) have made it challenging to secure the availability of players.

This financial strategy is part of the PCB’s wider efforts to make the PSL more attractive to global cricket stars while maintaining the sustainability of the franchise.

By sharing the cost of player payments, the league can ensure competitive rosters without jeopardizing the financial stability of its teams.

With such initiatives, the PSL is poised to continue its growth as a leading T20 cricket league, attracting some of the biggest names in international cricket.
