Islamabad: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif highlighted the need for practical measures to protect the glaciers for the protection of livelihood, agriculture and environment.
In a message from the World Day to observe the glaciers on March 21, he said that glaciers are guaranteed life on the ground as they maintain the environmental system in their natural form and especially ensure the supply of significant natural resources to clean water.
“In 2025, we are celebrating World Day for Glaciers for the first time,” he said.
He added, “Today we recognize the need for immediate steps to protect the main reserves of clean water,” he added, “he added,” There are more than 13,000 glaciers in Pakistan. This number is more than the glaciers of the land besides the polar regions. “
The Prime Minister said that Pakistan was one of the top countries affected by climate change.
He said that due to climate change, the weather was changing and the average temperature was rising, resulting in more than 10,000 glaciers melting rapidly.
As a result, he said that due to floods and droughts, millions of people working in the rivers, agriculture and the sector are at risk. He said that due to the melting of the glaciers, thousands of new lakes were formed, which increased the risk of destructive floods. He said that the flood of 2022 has made it clear that Pakistan is facing serious threats of climate change.
He added that these floods caused devastation in the population living along the rivers and rivers and in the plains, resulting in a total of $ 30 billion in economic loss.
As one of the most affected countries, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan needs further cooperation in various sectors in which the program to monitor the glaciers, the initial prediction system, the need to protect the impact of climate change to adapt to agricultural methods and to provide more cooperation to invest in alternative solutions to storing water.
“We need to promote international tourism internationally to prevent the destruction of valuable tourist assets from toxic substances and pollution,” he said.
He said that everyone needs to take practical steps to protect the glaciers because if the glaciers disappear, their livelihoods will also be destroyed.
