Supreme Court rejects plea to take suo motu notice on PTI protest deaths

The Supreme Court rejected the oral plea to take suo motu notice of the killings during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest at D Chowk Islamabad.

While the PTI says eight of its members were killed, government sources say at least three Rangers and two policemen were martyred during the protest.

The party confirmed that dozens of innocent workers were martyred by direct fire from the government machinery. The PTI spokesperson said that so far the party has received the details of eight martyrs.

According to the statement, Anees Shahzad Sati, Malik Mubeen Aurangzeb, Abdul Qadir, Malik Safdar Ali, Ahmad Wali, Muhammad Ilyas and Abdul Rashid are among the martyrs.

Earlier, the spokesman appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take immediate notice of the brutal killing of the workers and ordered legal action against the Prime Minister, the Interior Minister and the Inspectors General of Islamabad and Punjab.

The Additional Advocate General asked the Constitution Bench to entertain the oral plea of ​​the Additional Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) during the hearing of the case related to Climate Change Authority, in which he appeared through video link.

Justice Musrat Hilali responded by warning against expressing political opinions during the Supreme Court session.

Justice Aminuddin Khan, head of the Constitution Bench, said that the court is unable to examine the cases which are not brought before it. According to Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel, the bench does not want to comment on matters that are outside the jurisdiction of the court.

The Constitution Bench then orally rejected the petition.

Earlier, in a press release issued on Wednesday, the party spokesperson said, “In light of the government’s brutality and plans to turn the federal capital into a killing ground for innocent citizens, we temporarily call off our peaceful protest. Announcing the suspension.”

A party spokesman condemned the alleged “killings” and “terrorism and brutality against peaceful protesters in the name of the operation”.

The party founded by Imran Khan said that it will announce its future course of action in the light of the guidance of the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. “The political and core committees of the party will analyze the details of the government brutality and later, the findings will be shared with the PTI founder.”
