Islamabad: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi on Tuesday described the legalism as a key stakeholder in the justice system, which should be treated with dignity and respect, and should identify the importance of reforms to reduce matters and to ensure timely and effective justice.

Chief Justice Afridi was presiding over a consultation meeting with senior judicial officials to improve access to justice, which was attended by senior officials, including the registrar of the Supreme Court, Muhammad Saleem Khan and the Director General of the Federal Judicial Academy.

Participants reviewed the ongoing judicial reforms and digitalization efforts.

Discussions highlighted the progress of digital case filing, transparency and accountability. The IT Directorate informed the participants about connecting new technologies to make the judicial process more efficient.

A statement of the meeting said that increasing access and performance is a top priority.

Currently, about 57,000 cases are pending before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which is waiting for another 2.4 million resolution in other courts across the country.

According to the Registrar’s Office, 27,312 cases were fixed and 12,109 was disposed of between October 28, 2024 and March 7, 2025, while 7,370 new cases were established in the same period.

Pakistan’s Chief Justice Yahya Afridi’s pressure for judicial reforms is to remove the ongoing back blog and modernize the system of justice.

Key reforms include the introduction of advanced information technology, such as the e-outweight system, and a case management system that allows legal superstitions and lawyers to immediately access certified copies.

In addition, the procedure for opinion related to legal professionals and public has been implemented to strengthen the system.
